English 2010
My Work
Reflection
by Nina Sousley
During spring semester of 2013, I took English 2010. This was a class that I have been putting off for as long time because writing has never been my strongest subject. After my first assignment, it was obvious to me that I was going to enjoy this class. We had a total of four major assignments to complete, three out of the four which I will post on my Final Portfolio and emphesize about. The ones I chose to post, (which are also the ones I enjoyed the most) are the following; Assignment #1 Memoir, Assignment # 3 Position Argument, and Assingment #4 PSA Collaborative Project. Another reason why I chose these assignments is because I feel that they have helped me become a better writer. My grades on each assingment demonstrate my ability to fulfill these assignments, as well as an increase in my learning ability as a writter, as they show improvement through out the semester.
The Memoir assignment was a challenge for me. This was my first paper in a very long time and it took some time to get into a rhythm and make the sentences flow. This assignment was difficult and lengthy to complete and I was glad I started it in advance to allow myself that extra time I needed. What I enjoyed the most out of this paper was the topic. We had to recount a personal experience, offering “a kind of history that captures distinctive moments in the life of the writer and the larger society” (Harbrace Guide to Writing, p. 65). Writing about a personal experience, made the process much easier to settle back into.
Once I had an outline and an idea of what I wanted to write about, everything else seem to come to me with little effort. It took a tremendous amount of time to fix quite a few of the sentences that didn’t seem to fit or flow well in the paragraph, this required a lot of proof-reading, rewording, and proof-reading again. There were times that it became exhausting and I had to put it down and walk away for a few hours to clear my mind. Starting out fresh after a break gave me a new perspective each time to correct the challenges I was facing. I found this method to be very helpful and used it through out the semester with the rest of the assingments.
The Position Argument Assignment entailed the delivery of a point of view and the use of “logical, emotional, and ethical appeals to help an audience understand that point of view” (Harbrace Guide to Writing, p. 179). The topic I chose for this assignment was very interesting to me and I learned a lot more than I anticipated. To fulfill one of the requirements for this course, I chose to put this assignment into a PowerPoint. Doing this was one of the challenges I encountered during this assingment. After much trial and error, and adding more of my own argument to it, I was very pleased with the way it turned out and the good feedback I got from my peers. I have to agree that having a peer review for each of these assignments definitely eased my insecurities about writing through out the semester.
The final assignment; the PSA Collaborative Project seemed like it would be a huge challenge at first. As the assignment description explains; “Collaboration is a frequent approach to writing. More than just something your professors ask you to do, collaborative writing allows people to focus on personal strengths and benefit from a range of abilities. Working collaboratively with other writers can definitely be a challenge, but it can also be a way to learn and do more”. I was very nervous to work in a group due to some bad experiences I had in the past. I overcame a lot of challenges during this assingment. I feel that there was personal growth as a student, and there was a change of attitude in my part. Overall it was a very positive experience that demonstrated progress toward the course goals.
These assignments clearly illustrate my growth and progression as a writter and as a student in this class. I have fulfilled the requirements for this class and I’ve enjoyed it throughtly.
